Probate Assistant

A quick way to understand where you stand

The Probate Assistant is a short, interactive tool designed to help you get your bearings when dealing with probate and estate administration in England and Wales.

If you’re at an early stage and feeling unsure what applies to your situation, the Assistant can help you sense-check where you are and what your next practical steps are likely to be.

It is not legal advice, and it is not designed to replace proper guidance where an estate is complex — but it can be a helpful first step.

What the Probate Assistant can help with

By answering a small number of questions, the Probate Assistant can help you:

  • Understand whether probate is likely to be needed

  • Identify where you are in the overall probate process

  • Highlight the types of tasks that commonly come next

  • Flag areas where extra care, checks, or support may be sensible

Many people find this useful as a starting point, particularly if they’re not yet ready to read detailed guidance or speak to someone.

What the Probate Assistant does not do

It’s important to be clear about the limits of the tool.

The Probate Assistant does not:

  • Provide personalised legal advice

  • Confirm that you are handling everything correctly

  • Identify all risks or liabilities that may apply to an executor

  • Replace step-by-step guidance for managing an estate

  • Remove the need for professional support in complex situations

Probate often involves judgement calls, timing decisions, and risk management that can’t be fully captured by a simple tool.

How people typically use the Probate Assistant

Most people use the Probate Assistant in one of three ways:

  • As a first pass, to understand what stage they’re at

  • To sense-check what they believe needs to happen next

  • To prepare themselves before deciding how much support they need

Some then choose to work through the process themselves using structured guidance. Others prefer to talk things through before proceeding.

Both approaches are valid.

If you’d like more clarity

If, after using the Probate Assistant, things still feel unclear — or you’re concerned about missing something important — you may find it helpful to talk your situation through.

A Clarity Call offers a calm, no-pressure way to discuss where you are, what applies to your circumstances, and what sensible next steps might be.

There is no obligation, and no assumption that you want full legal services.

If you would like to talk through your situation, you can click here: Clarity Call.

A supportive tool, not a substitute

The Probate Assistant is designed to help you orient yourself, not to carry the full responsibility of estate administration.

If you’re unsure, cautious, or simply want reassurance before proceeding, that’s entirely reasonable. Probate is one of those areas where getting things mostly right can still cause problems later.

If you’re unsure where to go next, you can return to the home page to explore guidance options or decide whether talking things through would be helpful.
